WATERBURY- Carmie Calabro. 90, of Waterbury died on November 26, 2020. Carmie was born in Waterbury on March 15th, 1930. She was one of ten children born to Sicilian immigrants, Joseph and Carmela (Sanzaro) Calabro.
As the eldest, she helped them navigate the language and customs of their new country. Carmie graduated from Waterbury Catholic High, St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, and later earned advanced degrees from SCSU. Carmie worked for many years as a nurse in the emergency department of St. Francis Hospital and later for the Department of Developmental Services, various convalescent homes, and as a public-school nurse.
Being a nurse was an important part of Carmie’s life and one from which she derived a great deal of satisfaction. She also loved family gatherings, her home, her cats and especially, her many nieces and nephews. She never forgot a birthday or Christmas.
Carmie is survived by her sister, Linda Guerrera of Waterbury, her brothers Dino (Barbara) Calabro of Ridgefield, Joseph (Anne) Calabro of Watertown, Fred Calabro of Somers and Dennis (Margaret) Calabro of Roxbury, her sister-in-law, Lucy Calabro of Middlebury as well as her nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Palomba-Bourke, and her brothers Sam, Armand, and Edward Calabro.
The Calabro family would like to thank the staff at the Watertown Convalarium for the care that they provided to Carmie.
Services will be held at a later date due to the pandemic. The Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow Street is in charge of the arrangements.
