Retired Waterbury Firefighter


     WOLCOTT – Ernest G. Ouellette, 88, of Wolcott, died Wednesday February 5, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Nancy R. (Downey) Ouellette.

     Ernie was born in Waterbury January 6, 1932 son of the late George and Bernadette (Manseau) Ouellette and graduated from St. Anne Grammar School and Leavenworth High School.  He retired from The Waterbury Fire Department on August 21, 1994 after 35 years of service. He joined the fire department on December 7, 1959 and spent his entire career at Engine 2, many of those years as a driver. In 1993 he was honored as Waterbury Firefighter of the year by Local 1339.

     Ernie volunteered for over 25 years at the St. Mary’s Hospital Pulmonary Group.  He played Santa Claus for over 60 years for family, friends, the Waterbury Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and the Miller & Peck store.

     Besides his wife of 69 years he is survived by his children, Curtis Ouellette and his wife Diane of Wolcott, Ernest Ouellette and his wife Judy of Wolcott, Sharon Solocius and her husband Ron of Waterbury and Gary Ouellette and his wife Bernadette of Wolcott, 5 grandchildren, Erik, Crystal, Nicole, Veronica and Kaitlyn all of Wolcott and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two sons.

     The family would like to thank Dr. Jega and his staff for the wonderful care that they provided.

     Funeral Service will be held Saturday February 8, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow Street, Waterbury.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

     In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
