Beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother

WOLCOTT – Leona “Chip” E. O’Neil, 83, of Wolcott, passed away on January 28, 2022 peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving children. She was predeceased by her loving husband Charles J. O’Neil Jr. with whom she shared 53 loving years of marriage.

Leona was born on January 9, 1939, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Guy and Laura (Halstead) Elwood, formerly of Middlebury.  She graduated from Wilby High School in 1957. She had been a member of The Wolcott Land Conservation Trust, Wolcott Volunteer Fire Dept. Co. 1 Ladies Auxiliary and Hitchcock Lake Improvement Association. Her most cherished memories were spending time at her home with family and friends on Hitchcock Lake. She was an avid UConn Lady Husky and New York Yankee fan. Many of the birds at her lakeside home will miss her daily ritual of filling the bird feeders.

Leona is survived by her two children, a son Charles G. O’Neil and his wife Ellen of Wolcott; and daughter Sharon Liljedahl and her husband David, of North Canton; five grandchildren Kristin O’Neil, Keith O’Neil, Alister Liljedahl, Austin Liljedahl and Anessa Liljedahl; her little buddy, great grandchild Logan Liljedahl and her two siblings, a brother Guy Elwood (Peggy) of Fort Mill, South Carolina and sister Elaine Cetrone (Al) of Woodbury.

Arrangements: A funeral Mass will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. The Murphy Funeral home, 115 Willow St., Waterbury, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Hitchcock Lake Improvement Association, P.O. Box 6224, Wolcott, CT 06716, write “In Memory of Chip O’Neil” on the memo portion of check or Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department Co. 1, 395 Central Avenue, Wolcott, CT 06716, write “In Memory of Chip O’Neil” on the memo portion of check.
