Madeleine C. Marquis
WATERBURY - Madeleine C. Marquis, 85, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Willie Marquis for 58 years.
She was born on August 16, 1933 in Lewiston, Maine, daughter of the late Florian and Edwidge (Longchamps) Couture and moved to Waterbury in the 1950s when she married Willie. She retired from the City of Waterbury. She had previously worked at Worth’s Department Store as well as Bendix.
She was a communicant of St. Margaret Church in Waterbury for more than 50 years where she received the St Joseph Medal of Appreciation and The Hands and Hearts of Our Community awards for her volunteer work on the prayer line, Coordinator for the Campbell Soup Label and Box Top programs and St Margaret School bingo. Madeleine was also a member of the Ladies Guild for many years.
She recently became a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Waterbury. Madeleine made her home with her children, Diane and Richard.
Willie predeceased Madeleine in November, 2017. She is survived by her children; Jeannine (Ron) Hayes of Wolcott, Diane Marquis, Raymond (Chris) Marquis, Joanne Marquis, Richard Marquis all of Waterbury and Cynthia (Keith) Drost of Cheshire; grandchildren, Raymond, Michael, Kimberly, Kenneth, Eric and Delia. She also leaves her siblings, Gaetan Couture of Auburn, Maine, Robert Couture and Muguette Thompson of Lewiston, Maine and Rachel (Dan) D’Auteuil of Lisbon, Maine along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her sister Yolande (Phil) Gagne.
She will be remembered for her strong devotion to her faith as well as being passionate about helping people who were less fortunate.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday March 12, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 182 Robbins St., Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Calling hours will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow St., Waterbury.
