Loving Mother and Grandmother
WATERBURY- Roberta (Giacin) Messina, 85, of Waterbury, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2021 surrounded by her family after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of the late Charles V. Messina for 58 years.
Roberta was born on June 24, 1936 to John and Frances (Tarragoni) Giacin of Waterbury. She attended Crosby High School and graduated from Saint Mary’s School of Nursing, Class of 1957.
She was a dedicated Registered Nurse and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for more than 25 years and continued her nursing career for Dr. Massoud Marjani until her retirement.
Roberta enjoyed traveling, especially spending the winters in Florida, and vacations to Vermont, Myrtle Beach and Aruba. Cherished memories of Roberta will be remembered of family, cooking, games of setback and canasta, crossword puzzles, gardening, music and her love of ice cream.
She is survived by her three daughters, Medelise M. Hubbard of Oakville, Beth Messina of Waterbury and Cathy Belvedere and her husband Ralph of Waterbury with whom she made her home. She leaves her grandchildren, Ralph Belvedere, Alexa Whitman and her husband Brian, Billy and John Bochicchio, Kimberly Hubbard and great granddaughter, Mia Whitman.
She is also survived by her sister, Mary Demirs of Oakville, her sister-in-law Josephine Giordano of Waterbury and many nieces and nephews and she also leaves behind her cherished friendships including Jane Cooney, Betty and Andy Topazio and Lucy and Art Rosa. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Mark Hubbard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main Street in Waterbury. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow Street on Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Those attending are requested to please wear a facemask while at the funeral home.
