SOUTHINGTON- Ruth Mary (Cicio) Burns died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on January 8th 2020 in Southington, CT at the age of 96.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Deirdre and her husband Michael Kolesnik of Clinton; her daughter Patricia (Trish) and her husband James Reid of Southington; her grandchildren, including Kellie Ranaudo and her husband Bill of Clinton; Michael Kolesnik and his wife Kerrie of Old Lyme; Shannon Burns of Cromwell; RJ Kolesnik and his wife Suanne of Old Saybrook; Ryan Burns and his wife Laura of Cromwell; Kaitlyn DePaolo and her husband Andrew of West Hartford; Kelcie Reid and her husband Johnny Koczon of Glastonbury; Patrick Reid of Southington; and Melissa Ruth Reid of Boston; and her great grandchildren, including Michael Kolesnik; Isabelle Ranaudo; Paige Kolesnik; Ethan Ranaudo; Griffin Ranaudo; Isabella Davis; Sophia Kolesnik; Evan Burns; Cooper Kolesnik; and Lucas Burns. She is preceded in death by her husband Richard John Burns and her son Richard A. Burns.
Ruth was born on June 15th 1923 in Akron, Ohio to the late Anthony Cicio and Sophie (Turek) Cicio. She graduated from Wilby High School in 1941. She married Richard Burns, on April 7th 1945 and together they owned and operated O’Hearns Hardware on East Main Street in Waterbury for over 50 years. They traveled to Florida every year and spent summer weekends in Westbrook.
Later in life, Ruth enjoyed traveling with her sister-in-law Ruth Luddy, her best friend and roommate for over 30 years. They spent their winters in Lake Worth, Florida and enjoyed many vacations to Ireland, Cape Cod, Nashville, Canada, and Niagara Falls, among others. She passionately tended to her large family with great conviction. Every morning started with phone calls from Gram. She was accomplished at all domestic preservations and crafts, diligently using her handicraft to assist her neighbors and friends. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing cards, and entertaining at her pool. Her involvement in local politics cumulated with a lunch at the White House with President Jimmy Carter. She was an active and dedicated member of St. Michaels Church in Waterbury.
Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 9 a.m. from the Murphy Funeral Home to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for a Mass at !0 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
