Stuart William Semple

            WATERTOWN- Stuart William Semple, 85, born and raised in Waterbury, longtime resident of Middlebury, a summer resident of Clinton and currently living in Watertown, died Friday, February 1, 2019 surrounded by his family at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Donita (Cameron) Semple. Stuart and Donita were married in 1961.

            Mr. Semple was born in Waterbury on August 14, 1933, the son of the late William and Mary (Stewart) Semple. He graduated from Hopeville Grammar School and Crosby High School, Class of 1952 and then attended Southern Connecticut State University from 1952-1954 before graduating from Elon College with a degree in Accounting in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

            Mr. Semple had formerly been employed with Allied Control, Milford Crane and Machine and retired from the United States Postal Service.

            Stuart loved all sports, but in particular he was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and UConn Men’s and Women’s Basketball.

            He loved his Scottish heritage and could even speak with a brogue when he wanted to impress others, enjoyed bagpipe music, traveling to Scotland and always looked forward to family gatherings at holiday time and at the beach house.

            Mr. Semple was a member of the Middlebury Congregational Church.

            Besides his wife Donita he is survived by his children, Scott Semple and his wife Christa of Watertown, Craig Semple and his wife Lynn of Clinton, Jill Civitello and her husband Daniel of Middlebury, Kim Peters and her husband James of Fairfield and Steven Semple and his wife Erin of Morristown, NJ. Also, ten grandchildren, Lauren Peters, Stuart Peters, Nicholas Civitello, Megan Civitello, Abigail Semple, Cameron Semple, Moira Semple, Jordan McAulay and her husband Scott, Cole Semple and Madison Heidkamp.

            Stuart is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Palomba of Waterbury, his sister in law, Tonia Buczak Wright and many nieces and nephews.

            Mr. Semple was predeceased by his grandson, Matthew Joseph Semple and his sister, Audrey Kleid.

            Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Middlebury Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 1242 Whittemore Road in Middlebury. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown with military honors. Calling hours are Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow Street in Waterbury from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
