          WATERBURY-William (Bill) J. Ryan, 99, of Waterbury passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. He was the husband of the late Kathryn (Kaye) M. (Sweeney) Ryan.

          Bill was born in Waterbury on February 6, 1920, son of the late William and Mary (Young) Ryan. He graduated from St Mary’s Grammar School in Waterbury and Crosby High School, class of 1938.

          Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving as a Staff Sergeant in World War II with duty in Okinawa, Japan.  He was employed by the City of Waterbury Fire Department for 30 years and retired in 1977 with the rank of Captain. He was stationed at Burton Street, Northside and Bunker Hill Firehouses.

          Bill was a member of the Waterbury Elks Lodge No. 265 for 61 years, a member of the Waterbury Police and Firefighters Retiree Association, Evergreen Club and Olympian Club of Waterbury.

          Bill is survived by his daughter, Cynthia S. Ryan of Waterbury and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Kaye of 61 years, he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Betty Ryan and a niece.

          The Ryan family would like to thank James Cleary and the entire staff of Wolcott View Manor for their kindness and care.

          Funeral services will be Monday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 115 Willow St., Waterbury. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

          In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT 06708 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
